Job Description

 

Purpose

The Senior Electronic Engineer is an integral member of the project team responsible for delivering development projects of varying size and complexity. The Senior Electronics Engineer is responsible for the power electronics hardware design on multiple projects. The senior electronics engineer will be responsible for the control, sensing, communications and thermal requirements of the design under the direction of the Lead electronics engineer. The Senior Electronics Engineer will support the Chief Technical Officer and Firmware engineers in product delivery

 

Duties
  • Working closely with the Engineering team to ensure projects are worked to time and within budget. Assisting the lead electronics engineer with project timelines, budgets and resource requirements.
  • Designing high power DC/DC converters to a written specification. Taking design from schematic through to release for manufacture/certification.
  • Carrying out feasibility studies for new technical innovations.
  • Write technical documents that aligns with company process standards – Test plans, Test reports, verification and validation documentation.
  • Work with the mechanical team to design and evaluate thermal requirements and solutions for power stages
  • Using DFMEA/PFMEA techniques to evaluate design failure mechanisms as part of the design process
  • Test and verify design according to test plan and company test strategy to ensure design has met product specification. Supporting test engineers to carry out testing where required.
  • Making sure projects meets compliance standards. Working with external test houses for EMC compliance testing as well as pre-compliance testing of products in house.
  • Contributing to the ongoing improvement of the standard design process.
  • Any other duties as required.

Qualifications
  • Beng/Bsc in a relevant mechanical engineering qualification

 

Experience
  • +5 years’ experience in an engineering development environment, preferably sectors where price and quality are paramount
  • Experience working with at least one of the following technologies: Rotatory components, stator winding technologies, heatsink and thermal design, power train for electric vehicles, packaging of electronic components
  • Proven track record of product development from concept through to production, with a strong technical ability for applying their underpinning knowledge
  • Experience to solving problems including new technologies and innovations for complex engineering systems.
  • Demonstratable competence in the use of CAD tools (Solid Works preferred) to prepare design models and detailed drawings is required.
  • A capability to use specialist dynamic, structural and thermal analysis tools is an advantage.

 

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge/Qualities

 

Essential

  • Engineering degree in electronic engineering.
  • 10 years’ experience of working within an engineering or manufacturing based organisation.
  • Experience with high power DC/DC converters 2kw-10kW. Buck/boost converter knowledge is essential.
  • Working experience with converters powered by Li-Ion or lead acid batteries
  • Simulation experience of complex circuitry using such programs such as Simulink, Matlab and Simetrix.
  • Understanding of thermal management requirements for electronics and working in a multi-disciplinary team to solutionise thermal design
  • Proven experience in a product development environment – Familiar with terms New Product Introduction (NPI) Primary Design Review (PDR), Critical
  • Design Review (CDR), First Article Inspection (FAI) Verification and Validation (V&V)
  • Knowledge of both theoretical and practical aspects of electronic engineering & programming.
  • Analogue design of current and voltage sensing systems and general signal conditioning.

 

Preferred

  • Working experience with full-bridge, push-pull and forward isolated converters for inverter and battery charging systems
  • Commutation design experience for low voltage electric motor drives. Familiar with terminology such as star and delta configures motors
  • Hands on experience with designing own magnetics. Fundamental understating of proximity losses, skin effect losses, core losses. Deep understanding of material properties in ferromagnetic materials
  • Experience with control loop theory and ability to evaluate system requirements, simulate and work to produce control algorithms
