ETA’s Learning Lunch with Dr Carrie Goucher.

Meetings: a new, more efficient approach

"

Last week, we hosted our second ETA Learning Lunch, featuring Dr Carrie Goucher, who brings 20 years of experience in organisational culture change and holds a PhD in Systems Thinking from the University of Cambridge.

Carrie aims to transform how businesses think about meetings. Her research has been described as game-changing for meeting science, reframing meetings as a complex systems problem, helping to explain why so many meeting improvement efforts fall short.

Her studies reveal that successful meetings are shaped by culture, behaviours, and interlinked factors beyond the meeting room itself. Rather than focusing only on surface-level tools such as agendas, her work shows that the fundamental drivers of effective meetings lie in the broader organisational system.

The ETA team thoroughly enjoyed learning from Carrie and exploring how we can apply these insights to our own work. We’re excited to put this thinking into practice and continue our journey toward more meaningful, effective meetings.
