Role Purpose
We are seeking a hands-on and detail-oriented Hardware Technician to support the development and testing of innovative electric drive systems. This role is responsible for owning prototype builds, implementing hardware modifications, and maintaining the engineering lab to ensure smooth development and validation activities.
You will work closely with hardware engineers, test engineers, and project teams to assemble, modify, and troubleshoot hardware prototypes, support PCB rework, and maintain accurate configuration control. This role is critical to ensuring that hardware development progresses efficiently, safely, and in compliance with calibration and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
- Assemble, integrate, and modify prototypes of electric drive systems, including motors, inverters, and associated hardware. Implement design changes and support engineering modifications to existing prototypes.
- Work closely with hardware engineers to interpret drawings, BOMs, and instructions.
- Ensure all prototype hardware is correctly configured, functional, and safe to operate.
- Support PCB assembly, rework, and modifications as required for prototypes and development projects.
- Ensure soldering, component placement, and electrical connections meet quality standards. Collaborate with electronics engineers to troubleshoot and resolve PCB issues.
- Manufacture Prototype Wiring Harnesses and Test Boxes to support testing activities.
- Own the hardware lab, ensuring it is organised, stocked, and safe. Maintain tools, equipment, and test rigs in proper working order.
- Schedule and carry out routine calibration of lab instruments and equipment.
- Track lab inventory and consumables, ensuring adequate stock for ongoing projects. Ensure compliance with calibration, safety, and quality standards.
- Maintain accurate records of hardware builds, modifications, and configuration changes.
- Support engineering teams with version control of prototype hardware and in running hardware tests, capturing data, and monitoring test progress.
- Assist with functional, performance, and validation tests on prototypes.
- Identify and report any anomalies or issues during testing.
- Work safely with AC and DC voltages up to 600V and power’s up to 25kW.
- Ensure test setups are safe, repeatable, and compliant with engineering standards.
- Work closely with hardware, software, and systems teams to support project delivery.
- Support rapid iteration cycles to enable prototype evaluation and refinement.
- Suggest improvements to lab processes, assembly methods, and hardware workflows.
- Support development of new tools, fixtures, and procedures to enhance efficiency.
- Promote safe and efficient practices in all lab activities. Contribute to a culture of organisation, accuracy, and technical excellence.
Key skills
- Skilled in assembling, installing, and configuring electronic and computer hardware components in accordance with technical drawings and specifications.
- Ability to diagnose hardware faults using systematic troubleshooting techniques and test equipment to identify and resolve issues efficiently.
- Experience in performing functional testing, inspections, and quality checks to ensure hardware meets required performance and reliability standards.
- Proficient in using technical tools and instruments such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, soldering equipment, and diagnostic software.
- Ability to accurately follow and update technical documentation, maintenance records, and test reports to support traceability and compliance.
- Knowledge of safe working practices, including ESD (Electrostatic Discharge, Electricity at Work Regulations, Safe Systems of Work, Risk Assessments) handling procedures and adherence to workplace safety standards.
