CAREER STORY

Dan Butler.

From Intern To Permanent Graduate Firmware and Software Engineer.

"

From spending his days as an Intern Student Engineer, to now joining ETA as a permanent Graduate Firmware and Software Engineer, Dan Butler’s journey with us has been one of growth and hands-on experience. Fresh from graduating with first-class honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (BEng) from the University of East Anglia, Dan has made a strong impression on our team.

Dan’s passion for engineering started at a young age. “I’ve always enjoyed physics and mathematics, especially the construction and inner workings of technology,” he says. “I spent my time growing up playing with Lego Technic and starter circuit kits. I also enjoy working as part of a team, having been a member of my college and university rowing teams. That combination drew me to engineering, and ultimately to specialising in electrical and electronic engineering at UEA.”

He first discovered ETA at a university careers event. “I was inspired by the representatives I spoke with. They piqued my interest with the opportunity to work at the intersection of embedded software and electronics, particularly in motor control applications, which is a fast-growing and impactful area of engineering.”

During his internship, Dan gained hands-on experience with advanced microcontrollers, printed circuit board design, and circuit prototyping, while developing professional skills such as structured problem-solving and collaboration. “The internship was invaluable,” he explains. “It gave me confidence in navigating complex codebases and real test setups and showed me how firmware and hardware engineers collaborate in a professional environment.”

These experiences were key in Dan’s decision to continue with ETA into a permanent role. “The electrification of vehicles is an exciting area, and as a graduate, the job market can feel daunting. However, I had already discovered during my internship that ETA was a place where I could learn, contribute, and grow. From the beginning, I felt part of the team. The atmosphere is friendly, collaborative, and supportive, which assured me in my choice to stay.”

Looking ahead, Dan is eager to contribute to customer projects from start to finish, further developing his expertise in motor control firmware and exploring complex embedded systems. “ETA’s culture is collaborative, supportive, and forward-thinking,” he says. “There’s a strong drive to innovate and solve complex problems, so it feels like you’re contributing to something meaningful every day.”

We’re excited to see Dan continue to grow with ETA.
