Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Lighter. Quieter. Further. ETA’s patented electric drive systems give UAV platforms more flight time, more payload, and a smaller signature — without compromising reliability.

Every UAV programme is fighting the same equation: more endurance, more payload, less weight, less noise. For defense and security operators, the stakes are higher still — loiter time on ISR missions, acoustic and thermal signature in contested environments, and a motor supply chain that isn’t exposed to geopolitical risk are mission-critical, not just performance metrics. Commercial operators face a related challenge — extending flight time and payload capacity while keeping platforms quiet, reliable, and cost-effective to run at scale.

Most UAV propulsion on the market today is built around off-the-shelf motors never designed for the power density, thermal management, or rare-earth exposure that modern unmanned platforms demand.

The ETA Solution

Built on the same high power density platform behind our e-mobility and outdoor power equipment systems, ETA’s motors are engineered to extend endurance and payload simultaneously, not trade one for the other.

For defense and security primes, ETA’s drive systems are designed without dependence on heavy rare earth elements (HREE) such as terbium and dysprosium — reducing exposure to constrained and geopolitically sensitive supply chains, and supporting programmes that require supply chain assurance and resilience. Lower-noise motor operation also helps reduce the acoustic signature of ISR and surveillance platforms operating at altitude or in proximity to personnel.

For commercial operators — inspection, mapping, agriculture, and logistics — the same technology translates into longer missions per battery charge, reduced battery decay over the platform’s service life, and quieter operation for use near infrastructure, livestock, and built-up areas.

Performance

ETA’s patented electric drive technology — motors, controllers, and integrated drive units — delivers a step-change in power-to-weight performance for fixed-wing, multi-rotor, and hybrid UAV platforms.

  • Extended endurance — higher power density motors increase flight time without added battery weight.
  • Greater payload capacity — weight savings in the drive system free up mass for sensors, optics, or cargo.
  • Reduced acoustic signature — quieter motor operation supports low-detectability missions and community-sensitive commercial use.
  • Reduced battery decay — by up to 50%, extending platform service life and lowering total cost of ownership.
  • Supply chain resilience — engineered with fewer or no heavy rare earth materials, reducing geopolitical exposure.
  • Built for harsh environments —designed to perform reliably across extreme temperatures, altitude, and operational conditions.

Defence Applications

A faster, lighter, quieter, and more energy-efficient electric motor is a direct competitive advantage for UAV platforms operating in military and security environments. ETA’s motor architecture was engineered around exactly these attributes — and the gains compound across a platform’s mission profile:

  • 40% quieter — Low cogging torque significantly reduces motor noise, supporting low-acoustic-signature missions.
  • 60% less vibration — Smoother power delivery cuts the platform’s vibration signature, making the UAV harder to detect.
  • Up to 20% more range — Lighter motors free up mass for additional battery capacity, while higher motor speeds enable lighter, quieter rotor blades — two compounding gains, each worth around 10% on their own.
  • 20% more payload — ETA’s slot-less motor design uses less magnetic mass than conventional motors, freeing up capacity for sensors, optics, or mission-critical equipment.
  • 2x service life — ETA’s motor design is engineered for extended operational lifespan, reducing maintenance burden and lifecycle cost.

These gains are delivered without added complexity or compromise on reliability — essential for platforms that need to perform in contested, resource-constrained environments.

Why ETA

ETA doesn’t sell off-the-shelf motors. We license proven, patented drive platforms to OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and defense primes — letting you specify a system to your mission requirements while keeping full control of your own supply chain, integration, and certification process. With manufacturing partners across Europe, Asia, and South America, ETA can scale from prototype to volume production at the pace your programme demands.
